World university ranking: McMaster drops 2 spots

McMaster University has dipped slightly in the Times Higher Education rankings this year, dropping from 92nd place to 94th place in the world.

McMaster was still one of only four Canadian schools to rank in the top 100 overall, behind University of Toronto, University of British Columbia and McGill University in Montreal.

The Times rankings confirm that McMaster continues to be one of the best universities in the world, said President Patrick Deane in a news release. When this ranking is considered with the others released over the past few weeks, it is clear McMaster is providing high quality teaching and learning, conducting groundbreaking research and attracting and retaining the best faculty and staff.

The rankings use 13 performance indicators to examine a universitys strengths like research, international outlook and the teaching environment for students.

According to a press release from the Times, Canadian schools had a poor year in general. The University of Toronto retained its 20th place ranking, but all other Canadian top 200 universities slipped down the rankings, except for the University of Victoria, which entered the top 200 for the first time at 173rd place.

The Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities moved McMaster up to 90 from 92 on its world ranking list of 500 universities. That ranking is based on data like the number of papers published, mentions in citation indexes and number of staff/alumni who have won awards like the Nobel Prize.
