Worker dead after being injured by 'industrial material' at Janco Steel Ltd. in Stoney Creek

Hamilton police say a 36-year-old man is deadafter a workplace incident in Stoney Creek.

Emergency crews were called to Janco Steel Ltd.'s location on Arvin Avenuejust before 10:30 a.m., according to Hamilton ParamedicService superintendent Dave Thompson.

The manwas taken to hospital andresuscitation efforts were made, he said.

Police described the man's injures as "life threatening" and the said the Ministry of Labour had taken over the investigation.

A spokesperson for the ministry said the worker was reportedly "injured by industrial material."

Two inspectors are on scene.

Representatives for Janco Steel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A social media postfrom the Hamilton Fire DepartmentTwitter accountlisted an "industrial rescue" on Arvin Avenue at 10:40 a.m.

The call was updated 11 minutes later to include thatvital signs were absent.

The website for Janco Steelsays the company was established in 1988 and specializes in flat-rolled steel products.

"Our focus is the safety of our people [and]the quality of our products," it reads in part.

In2018, the company wasfined $150,000 after a steel coil crushed a worker, killinghim, two years prior.
