How to commemorate Remembrance Day in Hamilton and surrounding areas

Remembrance Day was first marked 105 years ago to commemorate the end of the First World War.

People in Canada pause yearly on Nov. 11 to honour the soldiers who have served the country.

Here's how Hamilton and other cities in the areaare marking the day this year.

Hamilton hosting several services throughout city

On Monday, the city willhost a sunrise service of Remembrance at the Woodland Cemetery. The event starts at 7 a.m.

Later that day, starting at 10:45 a.m., there will be a second Gore Park service thatwill be livestreamed on the City of Hamilton's YouTube pagefor those who can't attend.

The Hamilton Military Museum's admission will be free on Monday in honour of "the struggle of men and women in their work toward the goal of peace," according to the city's website.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will also have free parking and admission on Monday. The museum is also hosting a service with guest speakerBrigadier-General RyanDeming and a fly-by. The service starts at 10:30 a.m.

Other services taking place across Hamilton include:

• The Stoney Creek Remembrance Day parade, which starts at 10:30 a.m. on King Street Eastfrom Green Road to Cenotaph Park. A Remembrance Day service will begin at the park at 10:45 a.m.

• A mountain Remembrance Day service at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 163, starting at 10:30 a.m.

• The Ancaster outdoor service will also begin at 10:30 a.m. at the cenotaph in the Ancaster Old Town Hall.

• Waterdown will host its service at the cenotaph in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 551, starting at 10:30 a.m.

• At Glanbrook, the service will take place at the cenotaph in the Glanbrook Arena and it begins at 10:30 a.m.

Burlington

The City of Burlington said on its website the Burl-Oak Naval Veterans Remembrance Day service will be held at the Naval Ships Memorial Monument in Spencer Smith Park, starting at 9 a.m.

A Remembrance Day procession will leave from Central School on Baldwin Street and will travel to the Cenotaph in Veteran Square.

There will also be an hour-long ceremony, starting at 11 a.m. at the Cenotaph near the Burlington City Hall. Those unable to attend will be able to livestream the ceremony.

Niagara Region

The City of Niagara Falls is inviting members of the public to join their Remembrance Day service "which will pay tribute to those who sacrificed for our freedoms."

The service will take place at the Fairview Cemetery at the cenotaph by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Monday at 10:45 a.m.

This ceremony will also be livestreamed. Those unable to attend can watch on the City of Niagara Falls YouTube channel.

Other cities in the Niagara Region will also have services to mark Remembrance Day.

• St. Catharines, Ont., will have a gathering at their city hall starting at 10 a.m. and a parade to the cenotaph on Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m.

• Grimsby, Ont. will see a ceremony organized by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 127 at the Grimsby Museum cenotaph starting at 10:30 a.m.

• In Welland, Ont., at Chippawa Park starting at 10:30 a.m.

Brantford

There will be an overnight light display in Brantford, Ont., on Sunday. The display will begin at the Brant County War Memorial with a cadet vigil that starts at 6 p.m. Sunday until midnight and will resume at 7 a.m. Monday until 10:30 a.m.

The City of Brantford is also inviting residents to a service and parade on Monday. Starting at 10:40 a.m., the Walking March will leave Harmony Square and make its way to the Brant County War Memorial.

The service will take place at the park starting at 10:50 a.m.

According to the city, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will do a fly-pass during the service. There will also be a free open house and light luncheon at the Brantford Naval Veterans Association and the Gunners Club following the service.

In lieu of the events, Dalhousie Street between Market Street and Brant Avenue, and Brant Avenue between Church and Colborne Streets, will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
