Teen charged with murder of Devan Selvey back in court Thursday

The case of a teen charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 14-year-old Devan Selvey is due back in court Thursday.

The case of a teen charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 14-year-old DevanSelvey is due back in court Thursday.

The 14-year-old is accused of stabbing Bracci-Selvey outside their Hamilton school.

An 18-year-old man had initially also been charged with murder in the case, but the charge was reduced. The 18-year-oldand the 14-year-old, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act,were initially both charged with murderinthe Oct. 7 stabbing ofDevan, 14, outside Winston Churchill Secondary School.

The 18-year-old isnow charged with assault with a weapon, administering a noxious substance and unauthorized possession of a weapon.

Defence lawyer Jordana Goldlistsaid the Crown had to withdraw the murder charge, because "there was no reasonable prospect of conviction."

Devan's death kickstarted a community conversation about bullying and led to the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board setting up apanel to examineits anti-bullying practices.
