Police are investigating after gunshots were fired into a downtown home on Mary Street overnight the second such incident on the street in under a month.

Investigators were first called in around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, after calls came in about multiple gunshots fired on Mary Street in the area of Cannon Street East and Robert Street.

"Police can confirm that shots were fired into a residence in the area," a news release issued Wednesday morning reads. "The homeowners were home at the time but sustained no injuries. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation."

Investigators say a suspect was seen running from the scene and jumping into a nearby vehicle, which was described as a dark-coloured, newer-model hatchback.

Police were called to the same area back on Boxing Day, when several shots were fired into a residence. The people who lived there were also home, but weren't injured.

Again, in that instance, the shooter was seen jumping into a nearby car before taking off. The incidents did not happen at the exact same location, but investigators say the two homes are very close to each other.

"Detectives are investigating to determine if the two shootings are related," Const. Steve Welton said. Investigators believe the incident was targeted, he said, but won't comment further to "ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation."

"There is obvious concern when there are individuals using violence and or firearms in the community," Welton said in an email.
