SIU investigating possible injury of citizen by Hamilton police officer during 'physical altercation'

The SpecialInvestigations Unit (SIU)is investigating an altercation between a Hamilton police officer and a citizen that occurred on March 8.

The SpecialInvestigations Unit (SIU)is investigating a "physical altercation" between a Hamilton police officer and a citizen, which led to thepossibleinjury ofthe individual.

Hamilton police spokesperson Jackie Penman told CBC Hamilton an officer responded to a call for domestic mischief on Tuesday. The police did not provide further details on what occurred or where.

Then, there was a "physical altercation"between an officer with 15 years of experience and a citizen, according to Penman.

"Theindividual may have sustained a fracture," police said in a release.

Penman said the servicebecame aware of a video showing the altercation on social media.

CBC Hamilton has notseen the video, but police called it "concerning."

"There is a criminal investigation into the officer's action. The investigation in ongoing," Penman said.

Police added the officer has been suspended.

"Public trust and accountability are integral to our work and we are committed to upholding these values," said the police service.

The SIUinvestigates incidents involving police that result in death or serious injury. SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette confirmed that the unit, Ontario's police watchdog, is gathering information and more details are expected to be released Friday.
