Cambridge affordable housing project gets $4.2M in government funding

A Cambridge affordable housing project has received $4.2 million in federal and provincial funding to help build a 34-unit apartment complex on Hespeler Road.

The five-storey building will be built at 175 Hespeler Road, the site of the former Cambridge Driving School and across from Waterloo Regional Police Service south division office.

Cambridge MP Bryan May called the project "vital" and said it will create jobs and homes for residents who need it most.

"I know that projects like these make a significant impact in the lives of the residents who will call this building home," May said.

Cambridge MPP Kathryn McGarrysaid affordable housing helps people focus on other parts of their lives.

"When people have a roof over their heads, they can concentrate on other things in their lives, like raising a family or securing long-term employment," she said.

Steve Garrison, general manager of the Home Concept Property Management and Housing Cambridge, said the project continues their commitment to building quality and affordable rental housing.

"Apartment buildings such as this, especially in a station area on a major transit route, are vital to our efforts to provide suitable, well located, affordable housing for low income members of our community," Garrison said.

The money from the project comes from the Investment in Affordable Housing agreement between the province and Ottawa. The funding was announced Monday.
