Canada Election 2015: Waterloo Region goes Liberal, except for Kitchener-Conestoga

Four of the five federal ridings in Waterloo Region went to the Liberals on Monday night, in keeping with the Liberal sweep across Canada,anda reversal from 2011 when the region was solidly Conservative.

In Cambridge, Bryan May defeated incumbent Conservative Gary Goodyear, who had held the riding since 2004. May is the former general manger of the Boys and Girls Clubof Niagara.

In KitchenerCentre, newcomer Raj Saini defeated incumbent Conservative Stephen Woodworth, who was first elected to the riding in 2008.

The night's closest race, Kitchener-Conestoga, went to incumbent Conservative Harold Albrecht, the sole Conservative seat in the region. However, as of 1 a.m. Tuesday, final votes were still being tallied and Albrecht's lead over Liberal Tim Louis was less than 500 votes.

In Kitchener-South Hespeler, the region's new riding, Liberal MarwanTabbara was elected. Tabbarapreviously worked in operations at food-makerFrito Lay.

Liberal Bardish Chaggerunseated Conservative Peter Braid in Waterloo. Braid had been elected to the post in 2008 and 2011, though the riding was then known as Kitchener-Waterloo, until the boundaries were redefined for the 2015 election and the riding was renamed.

Wellington County results

Two of the three seats in Wellington County went to the Conservatives.

Liberal Lloyd Longfield was elected in Guelph, a seat that was previously held by Liberal Frank Valeriote in 2008 and 2011. Valerioteannounced in November 2014 that he wouldn't seek re-election in 2015, in order to spend more time with his family.

In Wellington-Halton Hills, Conservative incumbent Michael Chong was re-elected. Chong has held the seatsince 2004.

Conservative John Nater was elected in Perth-Wellington. It's Nater's first time as MP,though the seat has been Conservative since 2004, held by Gary Schellenberger.
