No car, no problem: there are ways to get your Christmas tree home

Taxi drivers and Waterloo region's carshare say owning a car doesn't have to be a prerequisite to bringing home a Christmas tree this holiday season.

In Waterloo region, taxis and Vrtucar will permit a tree on board, and some shops will deliver

Taxi drivers and Waterloo region's carshare say owning a car doesn't have to be a prerequisite to bringing home a Christmas tree this holiday season.

All three taxi companies say they'll pick you up with your tree, but ask that it be wrapped in a sheet.

Barb Montgomery, office manager at City Cabs, also said they can only take smaller trees - about 1.5 metres tall.

"A little bigger than a Charlie Brown [Christmas tree]," she said. "But not quite as big as the Griswold's."

And if you do put your tree in a taxi, the trip will cost you a minimum of $25, because you will be using a cab that's usually reserved for people with accessibility needs.

Carshare all for Christmas trees

Members of Waterloo region's carshare, Vrtucar, should also be aware that they can bring a tree home in one of the company's cars.

"People have been using our vehicles to bring Christmas Trees home for years," said Ontario Director Wilson Wood.

But they do ask members to be mindful of the fact that the cars are shared.

"How would you want to leave the car if your mother-in-law was using it next?" Wood advised. "We give suggestions like that."

And while the company does have membership plans with no monthly fee, Wood didn't think joining Vrtucar just to get a tree home for the holidays would be a wise idea.

"You have to go through a whole joining process with credit checks," he said. "It might be a bit much to join for that one item."

Tree deliveries are a thing

And if hailing a taxi isn't your thing and you're not a member of Vrtucar, there is one more way to get your Christmas Tree home without a car.

For a minimum of $50, some shops in Waterloo region will deliver your tree right to your door.

Others, like Benjamin Tree Farm in Waterloo, will go the extra mile and deliver, set up and decorate your tree, but it will cost you a pretty penny: $500, plus the cost of the tree.
