Conestoga students vote on mandatory bus passes

Conestoga College is holding a student referendum to decide on mandatory tuition charge for bus passes.

'Yes' vote would mean all students charged for bus passes as part of tuition fees

Students would be charged compulsory fee for bus pass if referendum measure is approved.

Conestoga College is once againasking students to vote on whether or not they want to add the cost of a universal bus pass to their tuition.

Currently, students who use public transit can purchase a semester bus pass for $292 through the school.

"As our demographic has changed and our population has grown, we keep getting requests and feedback around having a universal bus pass as a service to our students," Aimee Calma, president of Conestoga Students Incorporated told CBC K-W.

If students vote yes, the school would apply a new ancillary fee to every student's tuition, at a rate of $274 annually or $137 per semester.

Although students at the college are divided on the issue, Calma says the student association's priority is in making sure everyone has their voices heard on the issue.

"The measure of success for us as a student association is a high voter turnout," Calma said. "We want to know that our students feel heard."

Students can vote online until 11:59 p.m. on October 1.
