"The sudden rise and prevalence of crystalmethuse and distribution has coincided with an increase in violence within the drug subculture locally," said police in a news release.

Police did not immediately say exactly how much of the drug was seized in the last year. The numbers were revealed in a news release announcing the results of a drug bust.

Guelph police made six arrests and seized over 134 grams of crystal methwith a street value of $13,400 in an overnight bust last week, which was the culmination of a two-month investigation dubbed Project ICE.

Police said Project ICE was initiated in December after officers noticed a sudden and significant rise in crystal meth use in Guelph and surrounding regions.

The six people arrested include three women from Guelph between their 20s and 40s, two men from Guelph in their 20s and 40s, and one man from Garson in his 30s. They face an array of trafficking and possession charges.

In the bust, police also seized 2.8 grams of cocaine, 1 gram of heroin, 48 grams of marijuana, and over $9,400 in cash.
