Heat warning issued for Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County

Expect daytime temperatures of more than 30 C Tuesday and Wednesday this week with overnight temperatures bringing little relief, Environment Canada warns as heat and humidity settle in over Waterloo region and Wellington County.

A heat warning is in effect for Waterloo region, Guelph and all of Wellington County.

Environment Canada says hot and humid conditions are in the forecast on Tuesday and Wednesday. Daytime highs of 31 C are expected both days with the humidex making it feel closer to 40 C. There is a chanceof rain or thunderstorms both days.

There won't be much relief overnight with temperatures dropping to 20 C, the heat warning adds.

This is the fourth heatevent of the year for Waterloo region. There was one at the end of May and two in June.

"Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the air quality health index approaching the high risk category," the heat warning noted.

People are reminded to be on the look out for heat illness. People without air conditioning at home should seek out cooling centres in the region, tree-shaded areas, swimming pools, splash pads or take a cool shower or bath. People can close the curtains or blinds to help keep a home cool.

The Region of Waterloo has a number of cooling centres including city hall buildings, regional headquarters, libraries, community centres or rec centres and the Ken SeilingWaterloo Region Museum.

The warning also reminded people never to leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
