Police lay 118 charges in Laurier homecoming weekend blitz

Waterloo Regional Police are calling Laurier's 2016 Homecoming weekend a '"successful event" after officers laid 118 charges, more than half of which were liquor-related.

Police published the numbers Monday in a news release that hailed Wilfrid University's2016Homecoming celebrations as a "successful event," that saw thousands of students and alumnimake merry in the name of their alma mater.

The figures show that the vast majority, 114 out of a total of 118 charges, were for alleged city or provincial by-law infractions, while four were criminal charges.

Out of the 114 city or provincial infractions, most were alcohol-related. Theseinclude dozens of open liquor charges as well as other charges ranging from underage drinking to traffic tickets.

On top of seizing three kegs, police laid 114 charges for allegedly breaking city or provincial by-laws:

• 49 for open liquor.
• 5 for underage drinking.
• 2 for being intoxicated in a public place.
• 7 for consuming liquor other than a licensed premise.
• 37 for traffic offenses.
• 10 for noise by-law violations.
• 3 for failure to surrender insurance.
• 1 for littering.

Officers say they laid four criminal charges:

• 1 for possession of a controlled substance.
• 1 for breach of probation.
• 1 for drunk driving.
• 1 for obstructing a police officer.
