Lime recalls Waterloo e-scooters over fears they break apart

An electric scooter company that recently partnered with the City of Waterloo is recalling part of its fleet after reports that the scooters can break apart during use.

California-based startup Lime is pulling scooters manufactured by the brand Okai.

The Okai scooters will be replaced with more advanced models, a spokesperson said in an email statement, adding that most of Lime's scooters are manufactured by other companies.

Waterloo is scheduled to receive a replacement shipment from Lime in the coming days.

The company did not say how many scooters in the Waterloo area were affected by the recall.

The pilot project in Waterloo is the first of its kind in Canada.

It started in October, with the scooters being used in and around the David Johnston Research and Technology Park and along the Laurel Trail to the uptown promenade.

The pilot is set to continue until the end of November, before starting back up in April.
