Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Waterloo region, Guelph, Wellington County

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County.

Environment Canada warns these areas could experience strong winds, large hail and heavy rain Wednesday afternoon.

"Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles," the advisory says.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water."

The temperature had reached 27 C by 11 a.m. Wednesday, below the record of 30 C set in 1984.

The forecast calls for a partly cloudy evening, then clearing overnight.

Thursday is expected to be sunny with a high of 24 C.
