K-W Humane Society officer walked for an hour to bring stray horse to safety

An officer with theKitchener-Waterloo Humane Society helped the Waterloo Regional Police bring a stray horse to safety on Thursday.

EmilyTondreau, an animal protection officer,said she responded to a callwhere police found the horse in theNorthfieldDrive and Highway 85 ramp area.

"I have been working here for a year and this is the first stray horse call I've had, so definitely a first for me," she toldCBCNews.

She said the animal's safety was the first thing that went through her mind when she received the call.

"It's very busy during the day with the traffic from the local businesses and the off-ramp and on-ramp of the highway," she said.

The horse had no major injuries when police and Tondreaufound it, aside from a small cut.

Tondreausaid she ended up walking with the horse for about an hour to the St. Jacobs Farmers'Market.

"They have stables and water and a whole bunch of hay, so she was pretty happy there," she said.

Tondreaususpects that the horsemay have broke loose from the surrounding farms in the area, or the horse may have come from the market.

She said there haven't been any calls claiming ownership of the horse.
