Thousands of students hit the streets for homecoming parties in Waterloo and Guelph

Thousands of students hit Ezra Avenue in Waterloo and Chancellors Way in Guelph Saturday afternoon for homecoming parties.

Police in Guelph said an "intense crowd" had gathered near student residences along Chancellors Way.

"Police have increased presence in the area to ensure the safety of students and members of the community," a police release said.

Before homecoming, Guelph police warned people they wouldn't receive a simple ticket for infractions.

"Rather than being issued a fine upon committing an offence, individuals will be given a summon which provides a court date where the accused person is required to appear in court," saidthe release.

Infractions that would result in a summons include public intoxication, underage drinking, urinating outdoors and noise violations.

Meanwhile in Waterloo, police tweeted a number of arrests and said they were shutting down house parties.In anothertweet, police showed a person sitting on the roof of a house.

"If you're celebrating homecoming, do so safely. Officers are conducting enforcement throughout university district," police said in following tweet.
