Waterloo cyclist dies after collision with SUV

A 19-year-old Waterloo woman has died after she ran a stop sign on a bicycle and was hit by an SUV, Waterloo police say.

According to authorities, the woman was cycling to Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School on Wednesday at 7:05 a.m. and was travelling north on Wild Ginger Avenue on the wrong side of the road. The cyclist did not stop at the stop sign at Laurelwood Drive and crossed into the path of an eastbound SUV, police say.

The woman suffered leg and head injuries in the collision and was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital. She died Thursday morning and her identity has not been released.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Police continue to investigate, but speed is not considered to be a factor in the collision.
