Waterloo Region sets new 2017 biweekly garbage pickup schedule

Waterloo Region has released the schedule for introducing alternate-week garbage collection, set to begin March 6, 2017. For some residents, the collection day of the week will also be changing.

The Region of Waterloo has released the schedule for alternate-week garbage collection, set to begin March 6, 2017.

Garbage and bulky items, appliances and furniturewill be collected every second week. Green bins and blue box recycling will be collected weekly.

In addition to the new schedule, the region has imposed a four garbage bag or can limit per household. Any items over the limit will be collected if they have an approved tag, to be sold starting early in the new year at acost of $2 each. In February, 10 free tags will be supplied to households, the region said.

Pickup schedule

Starting the weekof March 6-10, garbage pickup will be in effect only for:

  • Kitchener.
  • North Dumfries.
  • Wellesley.
  • Wilmot.
  • Woolwich.

The week of March 13-17 will be the start of alternate weekly pickup in:

  • Cambridge.
  • Waterloo.

Waste collection changes

The region said in a release that some areas will also see changes to the day of the week for scheduled pickup.

"Bidders for the new waste collection contract had the option to change waste collection days for efficiency and cost effectiveness," the region said.

Waste collection daywill be changing for most resident of the Townships.

In Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, collection day will change for "a few thousand homes," the release said, and "a few homes on the borders of Kitchener and Waterloo will have new collection days."
