26 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region Wednesday

There were 26 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region on Wednesday.

Public health reported there were 192 active cases.

There were 11 people in the region's three hospitals infectious with the virus. There were also six people listed as being in the intensive care unit, although the region's dashboard notes people in the ICU may no longer be infectious but may still require specialized care.

There were nine outbreaks, four of which were in schools:

• Glenview Park Secondary School in Cambridge with two cases over multiple cohorts.
• Southwood Secondary School in Cambridge with two cases.

• Cedar Creek Public School in Ayr with two cases.
• Wilfrid Laurier University with two cases.
• Chartwell Terrace on the Square retirement home with three cases in staff members.
• An agriculture sales workplace with four cases.
• A place of worship with two cases.
• A retail store with two cases.

The current outbreaks in schools are impacting individual cohorts only and have not led to school-wide shutdowns.

The provincereported 454 new cases of COVID-19 and nine additional deaths linked to the illness on Wednesday. Ontario's chief medical officer, Dr. Kieran Moore, is scheduled to hold a briefing at 3 p.m.

The region's vaccination dashboard reported Wednesday that 76.15 per cent of the entire population in Waterloo region have both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
