60 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region since Friday

There were 60 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region over the weekend.

Broken down by day, there were:

• 23 cases reported Saturday.
• 27 cases reported Sunday.
• 10 cases reported Monday.

There were 235 active cases in the region. There were seven people in the region's three hospitals infectious with the virus. There were also four people in the intensive care unit, although the region's dashboard notes people in ICU may no longer be infectious with the virus.

There were no new deaths reported Monday. There have been 307 COVID-related deaths in Waterloo region since March 2020.

The region has not yet identified a case of the new variant of concern,B11529 dubbed omicron.

The region's dashboard shows there are 262 cases where a mutation has been detected, but further testing is required to determine which variant of the virusis involved. There have been cases of omicron detected in Ottawa and Hamilton.

10 workplace outbreaks

There were 12 outbreaks, including one at a school, one at a child care and 10 at workplaces:

• Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary School has 20 cases. The school is currently closed to in-person learning and the school board says it expects students will be able to return to the classroom on Dec. 6.
• Apostolic Faith Missionin Kitchener with five cases.
• A trades workplace with four cases.
• A career, skills and training facility with four cases.
• A transportation workplace with three cases.
• A chiropractic office with three cases.
• Two retail stores with two cases each.
• Jacob Hespeler Child Care Riverside with two cases.
• A hockey-related outbreak with two cases.
• A gym with two cases.
• A manufacturing workplace with two cases.

10 per cent of children vaccinated

The region's vaccination dashboard showed 10 per cent of children aged five to 11 received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine since the region began administering the vaccine on Friday. The region reported 4,363 doses were administered as of Sunday.

The region had received 20,000 doses last week.

The dashboard reports 74.99 per cent of the entire population of the region has received both doses of the vaccine. There is still no vaccine available to children aged four and younger.
