Wellington OPP recover body of 20-year-old at the Elora Quarry

Wellington Provincial Police recovered the body of a 20-year-old after responding to a possible drowning at the Elora Quarry Sunday afternoon.

Ontario Provincial Police in Wellington haverecovered the body of a 20-year-old manwho dove underwater at the EloraQuarryon Sunday and didn't resurface.

OPP responded to reports of a possible drowning at the Elora Quarryat around 4:45 p.m.

The Centre Wellington Fire Rescue and Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Service also responded to the scene, but couldn't find the individual.

It was the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit that later recovered the man's body.

"We are aware that the park was closed at that time," Wellington County OPP Const.Joshua Cunningham.

Cunningham said the man was with a small group of friends in the quarry area at the time, and that he had been swimming when he went under.

"We want to remind everybody that despite the nicer weather, the waterways in Ontario can still remain quite frigidand cold, making it difficult for even thosewho believe they're experienced swimmers, to swim safely," Cunningham said.

Police say their investigation is ongoing.
