Another inmate at London, Ont., jail dies, after being found unresponsive

An inmate has died at the provincial jail in London, Ont.

Officials say the man died in hospital Tuesday after being found unresponsive the previous day in the Elgin-MiddlesexDetention Centre (EMDC).

According to statements from the Ministry of the Solicitor General and London police, a male inmate was found in medical distress shortly before midnight Monday night.Paramedics were called to the jail while correctional staff administered life-saving measures, officials said.

The man was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead.

Inmate deaths trigger several investigations. The Office of the Chief Coroner will conduct one to determine the cause of death, and the Ministry of the Solicitor Generalconducts an internal investigation to ensure proper care policies and procedures were followed.

In this case, London police have launched their own investigation into the 20th at the Exeter Road jailsince 2009.

The major crime section has taken over the investigation. If the death is determined non-natural, an inquest will be held to examine the circumstances around it.
