Remembrance Day: What's happening in London and area

Remembrance Day services are planned for Victoria Park, Western University and a sunset bell ringing to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice.

Nov. 11 marks the 100th year since the Armistice that ended World War I

The world will mark 100 years since the end of World War I this Sunday, as millions of Canadians pause to reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

Remembrance Day services are planned for Victoria Park, Western University and a sunset bell ringing ceremony.

All of the events are free to attend and all are welcome.

Saturday evening candlelight service

Everyone is welcome to attend a candlelight service at Victoria Park which starts at 7 p.m. at the Carillon Bells. Attendants will then march to the Cenotaph for a short service.

Remembrance Day services

Londoners are welcome to attend the city's main Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph at Victoria Park on Sunday, Nov. 11. The service starts at 10:45 a.m. at the corner of Wellington Street and Dufferin Avenue.

Before the service, the Veteran's Parade will march fromthe Delta Armouriesstarting at 10:15 a.m.,down Dundas Streetto Wellington Street, to arrive at the Cenotaph at 10:45 a.m. A moment of silence will begin at 11 a.m.

Dufferin Avenue will be closed to traffic from Wellington Street to Picton Street, while Wellington Street will be closed from Dufferin Avenue to Wolfe Street for the duration of the service.

Also on Sunday, Western University's studentcouncil is hosting a ceremony at the Mustang Lounge at the UCCstarting at 10:30 a.m. for students, alumni, faculty and staff. There will be speakers on hand and a moment of silence at 11 a.m.

Bells of Peace

A commemorative bell ringing ceremony will take place at sundown on Nov. 11 at the Parish of Holy Trinity St. Stephens Memorial. The commemorative ceremony at 727 Southdale Road East will begin at 5 p.m.

London will join communities across Canada as the bells ring 100 times. In 1918, bells rang out across the nation to share the news that the war was over.

Remembrance Day was established following the First World War to remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

St. Thomas

The Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at Veteran's Memorial Park at the corner of Moore and Centre streets starting at 10:30 a.m.

Woodstock

The ceremony will take place at the Woodstock Cenotaph starting with the pre-laying of wreaths at 10:30 a.m. The colour guard parade will happenat 10:50 a.m.

Graham Street will be closedfrom Hunter Streetto Buller Street. Buller Street will be closed from Riddell Streetto Light Street.
