Woman dies in rollover near Birdtail Sioux First Nation

A 31-year-old woman from the Birdtail Sioux First Nation has died after the car she was in rolled into a ditch along Highway 355 near the western Manitoba community on Wednesday.

Another woman who was injured is in stable condition, say RCMP

RCMP were called to a fatal rollover on Highway 355 near the Birdtail Sioux First Nation in western Manitoba around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. (CBC)

A 31-year-old woman from the Birdtail Sioux First Nation has died after the car she was in rolled into a ditch along Highway 355 near the western Manitoba communityon Wednesday.

RCMP said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the rollover, which happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on the highway about five kilometres west of Highway 83, near the First Nation.

She and another woman were in the car, which was heading west on Highway 355, when it went into the north ditch and rolled several times, ejecting both of them, police said.

A 25-year-old woman, also from the Birdtail Sioux First Nation, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but her condition has since been upgraded to stable, police said Thursday.

It's not clear who was driving the car, RCMP said.

The incident is under investigation. Police said speed and alcohol are contributing factors, and the women weren't wearing seatbelts.

Birdtail Sioux First Nation is about 100 kilometres northwest of Brandon, Man.
