Charleswood black bear left area 'without incident' early Sunday morning, province says

A black bear that caught the attention of residents of Pepperloaf Crescent on Saturday left the area late that night after spending hours up a tree in someone's yard.

A black bear that spent the day strolling throughCharleswood on Saturday left the area unharmed later in thenight.

A spokesperson for Manitoba Conservation said the bear came down from the tree it was in and left on its own after conservation and police officers spent most of the day watching the bear from below.

Conservation officers tracked the bear northwest of the Charleswood area along the Assiniboine River corridor until after midnight on Sunday, the spokesperson said Sunday morning.

The province estimatedthe animal to be two or three years old.

On Saturday morning,police went to the westWinnipeg neighbourhood after gettinga call about the animaljust before 10 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service spokespersonConst. Rob Carver said.

Carversaid as far as he knows, this is the first call of a bear in the city that Winnipeg police have received this spring.

The public is advised to stay clear of wild animals and report sightings to the provincial tip line at 1-800-782-0076 or the Winnipeg Police Service at 204-986-6222.
