Bunkers to reduce mushroom plant's stink

The air should be a little sweeter in north St. Boniface this winter.

For years, residents have complained about the odour emanating from the Loveday Mushroom plant.

St. Boniface Coun. Dan Vandal has been working to get the company to do something about the smell; he even circulated flyers asking residents to complain to the province's Conservation Department.

Now, Vandal says the pressure appears to have worked: he says the plant will build concrete bunkers over the most malodorous parts of the facility. Where similar technology has been used in the United States, Vandal says it has shown a 75-per-cent reduction in foul smells.

"I think very significant, but it's not perfect, because when the odour comes out, it's pretty pungent," he says. "In a perfect world, we wouldn't have any odour, but you know, if it's a significant improvement I mean that's positive, but it's not perfect yet."

Vandal expects the new technology to be in place by December.
