All of Manitoba under extreme cold warning: Environment Canada

Extreme cold from northern Manitoba has descended on southern parts of the province, including Winnipeg.

All of Manitoba isnow under an extreme cold warning, with Environment Canada warning Tuesdaythat wind chill values could drop to dangerous levels until the weekend.

On Monday, the entire upper half of Manitoba, from the northern edge of the big lakes to the border with Nunavut, as well as the eastern side of the province between Lake Winnipeg and the Ontario border as far south asAtikaki Provincial Park were placed under the warning.

Most regions in the northern half of the province are expected to seewind chill values that makeit feel like45to 50,with those values ranging between 40to 45 in southern Manitoba,the weather agency says.

The frigid blast of winter comesasan Arctic air mass settles over the province.

Extreme cold brings an elevated risk of frostbite and hypothermia,Manitoba Health warns.

Young people, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, those exercising or working outside and people who are homelessare at even greater risk.

Environment Canada advises watching out forcold weather-related symptoms, including chest pain, shortness of breath, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and discolourationin fingers and toes.
