Fire rips through warehouse in Winnipeg's North End

Firefighters braved bitter coldas a fire raged through a warehousein Winnipeg's North End Tuesday night through to Wednesday morning.

Crews responded to the blaze on Jarvis Avenue, just west of King Street, shortly after 8 p.m., a news release from the City of Winnipeg said.

The fire started in a single-storey building and when crews arrived there was heavy, thicksmoke and flames coming out of it. The fire had spread to a connected three-storey building, creating dangerous conditions that prevented firefighters fromentering.

Theyattacked it from above with three aerial ladder trucks, while protecting two additional adjoining structures.

Crews were still working on the fireat8:30 a.m. and were expected to remain throughout Wednesday, the city's news release said.

Temperatures createdchallenging conditions for firefighters, the city said.The fire took place on one of the coldest nights in recent weeks, with temperatures plummeting to26C and a wind chillof36.

Crews are being regularlyrotated to provide breaks from the cold, and thearea around the buildings is ice-covered and slippery, the city said.

At this point, no injuries have been reported.

The two buildings sustained major damage and emergencydemolition is being planned, the city said.

Jarvisis closed between Main Street and Schultz Street, and Derby Street is closed between Sutherland Avenue and Dufferin Avenue.

Once the roads reopen, city crewswill monitorconditions for drivers and pedestrians, and applysand and de-icer to improve traction.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
