Peter Chura, a former Global TV anchor in Manitoba, will stand for the nomination to represent the Liberals in Seine River in next year's provincial election.

RAW: Former Global anchor Peter Chura announced today he will run for the Liberals in Seine River

Peter Chura, a former Global TV anchor in Manitoba, will stand for the nomination to represent the Liberals in Seine River in next year's provincial election.

Chura joined Liberal Leader RanaBokhari forthe announcement Tuesday morningat the provincial legislaturein Winnipeg.

The constituency is currently held by NDP MLA and former cabinet minister Theresa Oswald, who announced earlier today thatshe would not seek re-election.

Until early September, Churawas the 6 p.m. news anchor andsupervisingproducer at Global Winnipeg, where he worked foralmost a decade. He worked as a Parliament Hill bureau reporter before coming to Manitoba.

"I've been covering provincial politics and federal politics for literally years most of my careerso I'm familiar with the issues and the people and what it matters to the province,and especially my friends and neighbours in that area, in Seine River and south Winnipeg," hesaid.

Manitobanswill go to the polls on April 19, 2016.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to add a candidate with the competence and character of PeterChurato an already strong group of candidates,"Bokharisaid in anews release.

"He has been a pillar in his community and a trusted voice for allManitobans. He will make a spectacular MLA."

The Progressive Conservative candidate in Seine River is Janice Morley-Lecomte.
