The south-central Winnipeg riding Fort Garry has been on the books since the 1958 general election, although its name changed to Fort Garry-Riverview in 2008.

The name was switched back to Fort Garry in the 2018 riding redistribution, when the boundaries of the riding were also moved slightly.

The updated riding's boundaries are Pembina Highway to Jubilee Avenue and then the Red River in the east, and Waverley Street, Taylor Avenue, Poseidon Bay and Cambridge Street to the west. To the north, it's bounded by Grant Avenue, Stafford Street and Corydon Avenue, and its southern boundary runs along Bishop Grandin Boulevard, Pembina Highway and south of homes on Thatcher Drive.

The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Beaumont, Maybank, East Fort Garry, Wildwood, Grant Park and Earl Grey.

Its population is 24,510, says the province's riding profile (compiled from the 2021 census).

The median age of the riding is below the provincial median, at 34.8 compared to 38.4 provincewide, the riding profile and the 2021 census say. The census found the median household income in the area is $69,000.

More facts about Fort Garry

  • Almost 40 per cent of residents identified as visible minorities in the 2021 census, the province's profile says.

Voting history

The Fort Garry riding has been orange for the past 15 years. However, the redistribution of ridings in December 2018 means the updated riding now has more electors who voted Progressive Conservative in the last election than who voted NDP.

  • 1958 to 1986 (nine general elections): Progressive Conservative.
  • 1988: Liberal.
  • 1990, 1995, 1999: Progressive Conservative.
  • 2003, 2007: NDP.
  • 2011, 2016: James Allum (NDP) (riding called Fort Garry-Riverview).
  • 2019: Mark Wasyliw (NDP).
