HIV-positive man gets 14 years for sex assaults

An HIV-positive Winnipeg man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for having unprotected sex without informing his partners of his medical condition.

Clato Mabior was sentenced Friday morning on convictions for six counts of aggravated sexual assault as well as invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference. He was cleared on charges involving three other women.

The court heard Mabior had unprotected sex with six females, one only 12 years old. None of them were infected with HIV.

He will have to serve nine years of the 14-year sentence; he was credited with five years for the 30 months he has already spent behind bars.

The Crown had sought a 24-year sentence in the case.

The Sudanese immigrant also faces deportation.
