Assault leaves person dead near Salvation Army shelter in Winnipeg

Anattack left a male dead near a Main Street shelter in Winnipeg on Thursday morning steps away from where a man was founddead inside ahotel on Sunday evening.

Police called to the Salvation ArmyCentre of Hope Thursday just after midnight

Anattack left a male dead near a Main Street shelter in Winnipeg on Thursday morning steps away from where a man was founddead inside ahotel on Sunday evening.

Police were called to the Salvation ArmyCentre of Hope, at the corner of Main and Henry Avenue, on Thursday just after midnightabout an assault with a weapon.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene, a police spokesperson said.No arrests have been made.

Mark Stewart, executive director for theCentre of Hope, does not believe the victim was a resident of the shelter. He has been told the person was stabbed on Main thenran down Henry, next to the shelter, where hecollapsed.

The emergency drop-in at the shelter has been closed as police investigate. Stewart said staff have reached out to other shelters in the city to let them know the Centre of Hope has nocapacity to take anyone in.

A man was found dead on Sunday evening inside theManwin Hotel, four buildings south of the shelter.

Officers found out about that killing after they were called to a hospital around 5:30 p.m. and met with a seriously injured man who said there might be another injured man at the hotel.

Officers then found the body of Carl George Wescoupe, 40, inone of the hotelsuites.

No arrests have been made in connection with Wescoupe's death, which is still being investigated bythe homicide unit.
