Man throws aside handgun while being chased by Winnipeg police

A 31-year-old man has been charged with numerous offences after trying to run away from police and tossing a handgun along the way.
Police officers spotted a man speeding and driving erratically early Thursday morning in the area of Maryland Street and Portage Avenue. When they pulled his vehicle over he got out and ran. (CBC)

A 31-year-old man has been charged with numerous offences after trying to run awayfrom Winnipeg police and tossinga handgun along the way.

Officers on patrol noticed the man speeding and driving erratically early Thursday morning in the area of Maryland Street and Portage Avenue.

They got him to pullover in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street but the man jumped out of the vehicle and ran.

As he was being chased by officers, the man attempted to climb a fence and threw aside what was discovered to be a .22-calibre handgun with ammunition, police said.

Officers eventually caught the man, who tried to resist thearrest but was taken into custody without injury.

He is charged with:

  • Driving while impaired.
  • Failing or refusing to provide a breath sample.
  • Resisting a peace officer.
  • Carrying a concealed weapon.
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm.
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm in motor vehicle.
  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.
