Recounts ordered in Elmwood, Maples after Manitoba election

A Manitoba Queen's Bench justice has ordered two recounts of votes in the provincial election.

Judicial recounts have been ordered for Monday morning for the Elmwood constituency and Tuesday for The Maples.

Lawyers for the Progressive Conservative Party made applications to the court for recounts in both constituencies. Last week the PCs had only filed a request for a recount inElmwood.

The review of bothvotes was ordered Wednesday. Elections Manitoba staff will provide the ballots and administer the recounts in court next week, under the supervision of the judge.

Lawyers for the candidates will be present for the recounts.

New Democrat incumbent Jim Maloway won Elmwood on April 19by a margin of 101 votes over PC candidate Sarah Langevin.The NDP's Mohinder Saran beat Tory Sidhu Kaur by 127 votes in the Maples.

After the PCs made the application last week,Maloway told CBC News he welcomed a recount.

"They can make whatever recount applications they want, I don't mind. At the end of the day, I won by 101 [votes] and I might even win by even morewhen we recount," Maloway said.

The vote count on April 19saw 62 rejected and 160 declined ballots.

There were 65 rejected ballots and 57 declined ballots in the election night count in the Maples.
