Mayor Brian Bowman lent a hand on Monday to help build Habitat for Humanity homes in Winnipeg.

Bowman picked up the hammer after first presenting a donation of $3,000 money that came from his State of the City address in Marchto Habitat for Humanity Manitoba CEO Sandy Hopkins.

"Habitat does tremendous work in our city, building safe, affordable housing for purchase by low-income working families in our community. I am pleased to donate a portion of the proceeds from my inaugural State of the City address so they can continue to positively impact the lives of deserving Winnipeggers," said Bowman.

Local businessman Albert El Tassi, CEO of Peerless Garments, matched Bowman's contribution with a personal donation, making the donation to Habitat a total of $6,000.
