MTS unveils $53-million data centre in Winnipeg

On Monday, Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS) officially opened MTS Data Centres Waverley.

Located on WaverleyStreetin Winnipeg,the $53 million facility provides storage and cloud computing services to businesses primarily based in Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba. MTS bills it asan extremely safe place for companies to keep their IT equipment, an increasingly important part of business infrastructure as more commerce moves online.

MTS says the new Waverleyfacility represents the most advanced commercial data centre in the province. It will be "fully operational under virtually any circumstance" which includes natural disasters and power outages.

In the company's news release, Jay Forbes, MTS' Chief Executive Officer, promised MTS Data Centres will"offer reliable, secure, and flexible IT solutions providing peace of mind so customers can focus on growing their business."

In the same release both Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and Manitoba's Minister of Finance, Greg Dewar applauded the new facility:

"We are a hub for innovation and this centre builds on our momentum. These are the jobs of tomorrow that are being created right here in Manitoba," said Dewar.

Mayor Bowman pointed to MTS' new Waverleyfacility as a sign of a growing technology sector in Winnipeg.

"The new state-of-the-art MTS Data Centres will support a growing technologysector in our city, and encourage more innovation and collaboration that will positively impact our community," he said.
