Neighbourhoods in Winnipeg, Calgary vie for best in Canada

Inglewood in Calgary, St. Boniface in Winnipeg and Victoria Park in Kitchener, Ont., are among neighbourhoods in the running in the fourth annual Great Places in Canada contest.

The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is hosting the competition wherepeople can vote until Sept. 25 for their favourite place in the country.

"Every year, the voting period is exciting to watch as Canadians really try to promote their favourite places and put them on the map," saidCIP president Michael Gordon in a release.

Ontario isinthe lead in the competition with 11 nominations, while British Columbia, NovaScotiaand Quebec are tied with four nominations.

In the public spaces category, the nominees include the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum in Ottawa, Blockhouse Island in Brockville, Ont., Parksville Community Park in Parksville, B.C., Somba K'e Civic Plaza in Yellowknife, Blackfriars Bridge in London, Ont., and Kiwanis Memorial Park in Saskatoon, Sask.

For best street, the options are La Rue du Petit-Champlain in Quebec City and Historic Great George Street in Charlottetown.

Nanaimo's South End in British Columbia and Halifax's The South End are also battling it out for the title of Canada's Great Neighbourhood.
