New personal care home unveiled for Waverley West

The province unveiled plans for a new personal care home in Waverley West.

South Winnipeg is getting a new 120-bed personal care home in Waverley West.

"The projected growth in the senior population over the next five years is expected to increase pressure on the long-term care system," Health Minister SharonBlady statedin a news release sent out Wednesday.

"This new facility will help build capacity while ensuring quality care is available for those who need it most."

The new facility will be located in the Bridgwater neighbourhood on Bridge Lake Drive at South Town Road.

Winnipeg Mennonite Seniors Care Inc. bought the land and will operate the new facility, which will include individual resident rooms with private washrooms, recreational activity areas, family space and landscaped grounds.

"We're very excited about this project and to implement a new model of care," said Albert Friesen, past chair of theWinnipeg Mennonite Seniors Care Inc., and lead on the Bridgwater project.

There are 125 personal care homes in the provinceandmore than 9,700 people receive care in a personal care home, the news release stated.

Other provincial projects in the works include:

  • 41-bed expansion to the Holy Family Home in north Winnipeg as early as the spring of 2016.
  • new 100-bed personal care home in Morden.
  • Planning is also underway for a new 80-bed personal care home in Lac du Bonnet.
