New school opens in Norway House

A new school opened Wednesday in Norway House in memory of Helen Betty Osborne.

A new school opened Wednesday in Norway House in memory of Helen Betty Osborne.

The Norway House Cree Nation, governments of Canada and Manitoba, and the Frontier School Division were on hand for the official opening of the Helen Betty Osborne Ininew Education Resource Centre.

The nursery-to-Grade-12 school will allow children in Norway House to stay within their community.

Helen Betty Osborne, a young member of the Norway House Cree Nation, had moved to The Pas to continue her high-school eduction when she was murdered in 1971.

The $43-million facility has enough classroom space for 1,300 students. The school includes a cosmetology department, computer labs, tourism programs and an electronic communication facility.
