Norway House RCMP rescue woman who almost drowned while escaping attack

RCMP officers performed a daring rescue of a woman in Norway House who nearly drowned while trying to flee an assault.

Officers originally were called about the assault at a residence in the community,about 460 kilometres north of Winnipeg, at 8:30 p.m., says an RCMP news release. When they got there, the female victim had left the home and had walked into a swampy area behind the house.

Police found her neck-deep in water, in distress and calling out for help.

Officers found a canoe at a nearby home and paddled and portaged to get to her. The woman was pulled from the water and taken to shore.

She was then transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Norway House RCMP are still investigating the incident.
