RCMP officer shot west of Brandon

An RCMP officer is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after a shooting 15 kilometres west of Brandon, Man. on Friday.

An RCMP officer is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after a shooting10 kilometres west of Brandon, Man. on Friday.

One witness told CBC News a large police presence formed at a home in Kemnay, Man.shortly before 7 p.m.The witness said they heard two shots fired at about 7:30 p.m. and later saw aman in handcuffs being arrested by police.

Karen Bouchardsays officersbanged on the back door.

"Police were yelling at us at the back of the house to open up the patio door and then they told us to get to the basement.That they were being shot at and not to come upstairs until they let us know it was safe."

Bouchard says she and others who live in the housewerescared to look out the window.

"We did happen to peek out once and we did see an officer walk by the window with a rifle. So we did lay low and just waited for them to come to the door and say that everything was OK."

Another Kemnay resident toldCBC News roads were closed in theTrans-Canada Highway and Highway 1A area intersection around 7:30 p.m.

Eric Olsen was on his way home whenRCMP stopped him at the intersection.He said they told him there was an armed standoff between officers and aman with a high-powered rifle inside a home nearby.

Olsen said RCMPlet him gohome though the area ataround 8:30 p.m.

RCMPwill only say the injured officer's injuries are non-life threatening.

One individual wastaken into custody.
