Rifle-toting man arrested at shopping mall

A 23-year-old man is in custody after being found in Portage Place Shopping Mall with a rifle.

A 23-year-old man is in custody after being found in Winnipeg's Portage Place Shopping Mall with a rifle.

Officers patrolling the mall Friday noticed a man who was acting suspiciously around 1 p.m. CT.

When they approached him, they found he had a rifle and some ammunition.

"These officers acted extremely quickly," Const. Natalie Aitken, a spokeswoman for Winnipeg police, said. "They are trained to notice certain things and in this case, that was exactly what they had done. They were patrolling in that area. That's what they are there for."

The man was arrested andfaces a number of charges, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and carrying a concealed weapon.
