Man killed in River Park South rollover

A man is dead after a truck rolled over in the River Park South area Saturday afternoon.

Multiple witnesses told CBC News the man was left pinned under a red Dodge Ram pickup truck after it veered off John Forsyth Road, clipped a tree and flipped over onto its side. Police confirmed that the man died.

The crash happened on the boulevard in front of Aisosa Ekomwenrenren's home on the suburban street near the intersection of Paddington Road, around 1:15 p.m.

Ekomwenrenren was in his front yard at the time and says he saw a woman who was also in the truck struggling to get out moments after the crash.

"Immediately we helped the female passenger out, I went back to my house, brought a blanket and wrapped it around her because she was in shock," Ekomwenrenren said.

"She was screaming but I just wrapped her with a blanket and calmed her down."

Ekomwenrenren said the woman was able to walk and didn't appear to be seriously injured.

He said truck hadn't been speeding, and says police officers at the scene told him the man, who he said had been driving, may have suffered a seizure in the moments before the crash.

Ray Beaudette didn't see the crash but rushed to the scene after his wife saw the truck flipped over near the sidewalk in front of their neighbour's yard and screamed.

He used a ladder to climb up to the driver's side window and help the woman out of the truck.

"I was afraid to get on the truck, I went and got a ladder, to avoid the truck tipping over and crushing the person that was partially ejected from the vehicle," Beaudette said.

"Responders took over 10 minutes to show up and they were unable to lift the vehicle to remove the man."

Beaudette said the man appeared to still be breathing while they waited for first responders. He said the female passenger also told him the driver may have suffered a seizure.

John Forsyth Road was blocked at Paddington for several hours Saturday afternoon while police investigated the area around the truck, which remained on its side with a yellow tarp covering the cab.

Police have yet to comment on the details of the crash and a spokesperson from the city would only say two people were taken to hospital, one in critical condition, the other in stable.
