Man dies after serious assault on Higgins Avenue: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police are investigating a homicide after a man wasseriously assaulted downtown and later died of his injuries.

Winnipeg police are investigating a homicideafter a man who wasseriously assaulted in the city's south Point Douglas areaearly Wednesday later died of his injuries.

Officers were called to Higgins Avenue between Main and Austin streets just after 3 a.m.,where they found a man with serious injuries in front of a business. They administered emergency medical care, a news release from the Winnipeg Police Service said.

He was taken to hospital in critical conditionbut was pronounced dead there.

Yellow tape was seen blocking the road and the front ofthe Mount Royal Hotel on Higgins, just east of Main Street, Wednesday morning, and there was blood on the sidewalk and steps in front of the hotel.

The police service's homicide unit has taken over the investigation.
