Wildfire threat to Manitoba village subsides

Thevillage of Badger has been saved from a nearby wildfire, at least for the time being.

The community, in the southeast corner of Manitoba, was evacuated on Sunday as16 people were forced from their homes.

Municipal officials, however,have not liftedthe state of local emergency in the area andthere is no word on when residents might return.

A change in wind direction and strength could still pose danger.

The fire near Badger is approximately5,300 hectares (53 square kilometres) in size, according to the Manitoba government.

Vita fire

Municipal fire crews from eastern Manitoba continue to work on a large fire of approximately 41 square kilometreslocated in the Rural Municipalityof Stuartburn,south of Highway201.

Marchand fire

Work continues to put out a fire south of Marchand, which remains approximately 11 squarekilometres in size.No structures are threatened at this time.

No official causes of any of the fires have been determined at this time but investigators continue to look into it.
