About 60,000 people stopped by The Forks over the long weekend, says Chelsea Thomson, manager of marketing and communications for the Winnipeg destination.

On Monday alone, 24,000 people were counted inside The Forks market, she said. About 18,000 skaters were counted using the Red River Mutual Trail.

The numbers over the Louis Riel Day weekend were much higher than last year, when temperatures were much colder, Thomson said.

"Our numbers vary greatly due to temperature," she said.

Monday's daytime high in Winnipeg was 4 C, Environment Canada reported.

Festival du Voyageur also posted large numbers of visitors at Voyageur Park. Between 8,000 and 10,000 people were admitted to the festival on Louis Riel Day.
