2 people found dead at temporary encampment, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says

Two people were found deadat a temporary encampment in Winnipeg, the city's fire and paramedic service says.

At about 1:15 p.m. on Monday, medical personnel responded to reports that two people were in cardiac arrest at a temporary encampment on Euclid Avenue, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service told CBC News in an email.

Both people were pronounced dead when first responders arrived, according to WFPS.

Joe Zuken Heritage Park, located alongEuclid Avenue in the North Point Douglas neighbourhood, appeared to be taped off by police on Monday afternoon. CBC News also observed officers looking into a tent at the park.

Manitoba's office of the medical examiner is now working to determine the cause of death for both individuals, according to the WFPS.

The incident shows the need for a proactive approach to dealing with homelessness in the neighbourhood, said Catherine Flynn, chair of the Point Douglas Residents' Committee.

"There's there's been a lot of talk about, you know, people have a right to live on the land in tents, and they have a right to inhabit bus shelters," Flynn said.

"I would like to see a concerted effort to find people decent places to live, because often they're not in decent places and that's why they're living in tents."
