Family and friends came together Thursday night to honour the memory of a 24-year-old man who died in hospital over the weekend after police found him seriously injured on a Winnipeg sidewalk.

Candles lit the nightand the sounds of drums and song echoed down Keenleyside Street, in the city's East Elmwood area, during a vigil for Joseph Campbell. Dozens of people attended the gatheringfor the 24-year-old, whose death is being investigated as a homicide.

"I want justice for my brother, he shouldn't have went that way," said Irene Bussidor. "He was on the right path his son's gonna be one in a couple of weeks and he's not gonna be there and he has three kids and one stepchild."

Bussidor said Campbell is one of nine siblings and was the third oldest of the bunch. She added that although he had many siblings, they all shared their own unique bond with Campbell.

"He was like my little big brother, even though he's my little brother," she said. "He acted like my big brother, always made sure I was OK."

She added the large showing of support Thursday night, close to 100 people, didn't surprise her.

"He was a good person, he made friends everywhere he went," said Bussidor. "I'd be like 'don't be talking to that stranger' and then he'd be talking to them, making friends and whatever.

"I'm so thankful for everyone that came out for him."

Police were called around 11:20 p.m. Saturday about Campbell, who was on the sidewalk between Manhattan Avenue and Kent Road. He was brought to hospital where he later died.

"I just want answers, I want to know why this happened, why our brother," said Bussidor. "He's leaving behind eight siblings, his children, our mom and dad, everyone that he lit up in his life."
