Winnipeg barber raises more than $1K for refugees

A Winnipeg barber wants to help refugees, like himself, just starting out in Manitoba.

Ali Al-dulaimi owns the WKND Barber Shop on McDermot Avenue in Winnipeg. Heis also a formerrefugeefrom Iraq.

"When I was in the refugee camp I was always looking for a home and I was looking for people to help me," he recalled.Al-dulaimi settled in Manitoba in 1996.

"When people ... help you it can mean a lot."

All sales made atWKNDon Monday, plus any additional donations from clients, will be donatedto Welcome Place, he said.

"They can dowhatever they need to do with it," said Al-dulaimi.

The barber hopes to raise $3,000 on Monday and as of 5:00 p.m. Al-dulaimi was confident he raised more than $1,000. He plans to stay open past closing time at 7 p.m. if it means making his goal.

"We're blessed, we got everything, God blessed us with everything and we should give back to people who [don't] have anything," said Al-dulaimi.

The WKND Barber Shop is located at233 McDermot Ave. in Winnipeg.
